PCT has extensive experience forming composites via the wet lay-up/hand lay-up method. In this process, resins are impregnated by hand into fibers, such as woven, knitted, stitched or bonded fabrics, usually accomplished by rollers or brushes. Nip-roller type impregnators force resin into the fabrics, while in a bath of resin, with rotating rollers. Laminates cure under standard atmospheric conditions.
Typical applications include standard wind-turbine blades, production boats and architectural moldings.
Hand Lay-Up Process Advantages
- Use of higher fiber contents and longer fibers than with spray lay-up.
- Wide choice of suppliers and materials.
- Low cost tooling with room temperature cure resins.
- Simple principles to teach.
- Widely used for many years
